5:37
On Sunday, November first, TECO's Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach opened for its twenty twenty-six to twenty twenty-seven season, marking the free attraction's fortieth anniversary.
5:51
Nearly four hundred thousand visitors come each season to watch manatees gather in the warm water canal near the Big Bend Power Station, and the center has now welcomed more than eight point seven million visitors since opening.
6:07
This season brings a permanent home for cow-nosed rays in the touch tank, so the rays no longer have to be moved away for the summer.
6:16
Admission and parking are free, and the center is open daily from 10 to 5, November 1st through April 15th, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.
6:28
In higher education news from Florida, Florida Atlantic University is opening another door into nursing. Its Christine E.
6:37
Lynn College of Nursing is launching a new traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing track, with the first cohort scheduled to begin in May 2027.
6:48
The program is designed for students who have completed Florida Atlantic's general education requirements or who hold an Associate of Arts degree from a Florida State College, with 60 credits of upper-division nursing coursework over five semesters and clinical experience in hospitals and community settings.
7:09
Graduates will be eligible to take the licensing exam to become registered nurses, and applications for the first cohort are expected to open in mid-November.
7:19
On the high school football field, a Florida team got its season back. On Sunday, November 1st, South Fort Myers won its appeal, and the Florida High School Athletic Association rescinded three forfeits.
7:33
The Wolfpack had self-reported using an ineligible player in its first three games, all wins, after discovering the situation before its September 18th game.
7:45
With those wins restored, the team's final regular season record returns to 8-2, and it should be safely in the Class 4A Region 3 playoffs.
7:57
And in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers won a game the old-fashioned way, on the ground in the rain.
8:04
On Sunday, Tampa Bay beat the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 at Raymond James Stadium in a downpour that left standing water on the field.
8:13
Running back Bucky Irving set career highs with 27 carries for 170 rushing yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Baker Mayfield attempted just three passes and completed nine, and the Buccaneers ran the ball 56 times.
8:30
They became the first team since the 1974 Buffalo Bills to win a game without completing a pass, and it was Tampa Bay's first home win this season after an 0-4 start.
8:43
Now, a bit of hope from the world of clean energy, with an important qualifier.
8:49
Researchers at the University of Oxford and their international collaborators have found that a familiar semiconductor, bismuth sulfide, can partly avoid a stubborn problem in solar materials.
9:02
Materials that absorb light well often lose their electrical charges too quickly.
9:08
In a study published in Nature, the team identified a mechanism that, at room temperature, reduced the relevant charge loss rate by roughly 75% compared with conventional materials that absorb light similarly well.
9:25
Now, that is not a 75% increase in solar panel efficiency, and this is not a finished higher efficiency panel.
9:35
It is a mechanism, a new way of thinking about the material, and the next challenge is turning it into practical devices. And finally, a mystery solved after more than 60 years.
9:48
Chemists led by Professor Holger Braunschweig at the University of Würzburg have succeeded in isolating a group of molecules long considered too unstable to capture, known as oxoboranes.
10:02
These compounds contain an unusual triple bond between boron and oxygen, a combination researchers had struggled to isolate in lasting form for over six decades.
10:15
The team has now produced three surprisingly stable oxoboranes in work published in Nature Chemistry on October 27th.
10:24
After all those years of trying, the door is open to a whole family of molecules that chemistry could barely touch before. That's the good news for today. Be good to each other and share good news.
