[gentle music] Good morning, Parrish. This is George Henman in the heart of Parrish, Florida. Here's today's good news for October thirtieth, twenty twenty-six.
0:12
Out at Rye Preserve, the old playground is coming down, and a new one is on its way. The county closed the playground on Monday, October twenty-sixth, so crews could remove it and put a new playground in its place.
0:26
The county says the new playground should be open in early November. The rest of the preserve stays open, sunrise to sunset, all year long.
0:35
That means the trails, the river launch, and the fishing are still there for you while the playground gets its fresh start. A little closer to home, construction has begun on a new amenity campus at North River Ranch.
0:49
Pulte Group has broken ground on an eighteen million dollar campus at Explore by Del Webb North River Ranch, the first Explore by Del Webb community in Florida.
1:01
At the center will be a seventeen thousand three hundred square foot foundry clubhouse with places to eat, gather, and play, including a golf simulator lounge and a game room.
1:14
Next door, the Wellspring Wellness Center will offer a fitness center, a movement studio, saunas, a cold plunge, a pool with a lazy river, shaded pickleball courts, a yoga lawn, walking trails, and a dog park.
1:30
The campus is expected to be finished in twenty twenty-eight. Now, some applause for our young performers.
1:37
Parrish Community High School's Troupe Ten thousand one hundred eighty-five took thirty-three students to the District Nine Thespi Festival, and they came home with twenty-one superior ratings, the festival's highest rating, along with nine excellent ratings.
1:55
Six of their entries earned top honors in their rooms. They did all of that while they were also getting ready for the school's production of Into the Woods.
2:04
Manatee School for the Arts did fine work of its own, with eleven superior ratings, eight excellent ratings, and three top honors.
2:13
Together, the two troupes earned thirty-two superior ratings, seventeen excellent ratings, and nine top honors in a festival that brought together fifty-one schools and more than one thousand theater students.
2:28
Down in Palmetto, a new tradition got off to a strong start this week.
2:33
All Four Teens held its first annual Education and Fun Day on Wednesday, October twenty-eighth, at Turner's Farm on a day when Manatee County Schools let out early.
2:44
The nonprofit offered free hands-on CPR training for all ages, along with opioid overdose prevention education, naloxone awareness, and EpiPen education.
2:57
Children and teenagers enjoyed free attractions too, including a bounce house, a playground, and a corn pit. It was a full day of practical skills, family fun, and neighbors looking out for one another.
3:11
Bradenton River High School has a new Hall of Fame, and its first class is in.
3:16
The school announced its inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame class this week, honoring three former student athletes for what they achieved in high school and college and in professional sports.
3:28
A first class sets the standard for every class that follows, and these three Pirates earn that place. For families with little ones, here is a date worth writing down.
3:40
The Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County will offer free developmental screenings for children from one month old through five years old on November eighteenth and December ninth.
3:53
The screenings help families keep track of how their child is growing and catch any concerns early when help can do the most good. Good news, too, for young people who dream of flying.
4:05
A new aviation education hangar is breaking ground at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport.
4:12
It will give a permanent home to Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter one hundred eighty and its Teen Aircraft Factory of Manasota program, where teenagers learn by building real airplanes with real tools alongside experienced mentors.
4:30
That is the kind of hands-on learning that can turn a curiosity into a career. And if tonight finds you out with the little ghosts and goblins, Anna Maria Island has you covered.
4:43
The Island Trunk or Treat and the Trail of Treats are both on for Friday, October thirtieth, with treats, decorated cars, and plenty of room to stroll. It is a friendly, family way to close out October close to home.
4:59
Over in Tampa, today brings something practical and kind. The city is hosting its first ever Tampa Tinker Community Repair Workshop from ten in the morning until one in the afternoon at City Center at Hanna Avenue.
5:15
Residents can bring one broken household item, a lamp, a fan, a toaster, a toy, a bicycle with a flat tire, and skilled city team members will help troubleshoot it and try to repair it.
5:29
Registration is required and the idea is simple: fix what you can, save some money, learn a skill, and keep a good item out of the waste stream. Tampa has more good news on the housing front.
5:43
The city says it has now passed its goal of ten thousand affordable housing opportunities, with ten thousand seven hundred seventy units now planned, underway, or completed.
5:55
Almost half of those are already under construction or finished.
6:00
Since twenty nineteen, the city has invested more than one hundred million dollars in affordable housing initiatives and assistance programs, helping income-eligible households, supporting first-time home buyers, and helping longtime residents stay safely in the neighborhoods they call home.
6:19
Through the city's Dare to Own the Dream program, 71 people became first-time homeowners in fiscal year 2026, a new record for the program. For homeowners across Florida, there is welcome news on insurance.
6:35
State regulators announced this week that more than 824,300 Florida homeowners will see rate decreases on new policies or renewals effective in October, with decreases of up to 12.1%.
6:50
The actual savings will vary by company, coverage, and policy, but the direction is good.
6:57
Regulators also say another 450,000 Floridians are expected to see decreases in the months ahead, in November, December, and January.
7:08
Now, to a young woman from Gainesville who just reminded us what a comeback looks like.
7:14
Florida junior Skye Blakely did not even know she would compete in the all-around at the World Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam until the night before team qualification.
7:27
By the time she left, she was the all-around world champion. She led all women at the championships with four medals, all-around gold, team silver, and bronze on vault and uneven bars.
7:42
And she was the only woman to qualify for four individual event finals.
7:48
She became just the ninth American woman to win a world all-around title, and the first gymnast to compete in NCAA gymnastics and win a world all-around championship in the same calendar year.
8:03
Two years ago, an Achilles injury ended her chance at the Olympic team. This year, she stood on top of the world. And finally, a bit of hope from the world of medicine.
8:16
Scientists at Northwestern Medicine and their collaborators have shown that a simple blood test can help track small-cell lung cancer.
8:25
In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers used as little as one milliliter of blood to measure cancer burden and identify molecular subtypes of the disease without repeated tissue biopsies.
8:39
They studied 441 plasma samples, and their blood-based score matched up strongly with what doctors saw on tumor imaging.
8:48
The researchers say larger studies are still needed before this becomes routine care, but the promise is plain.
8:56
A blood test that helps doctors follow treatment, spot changes early, and bring precision medicine to a cancer where it has been especially hard to come by. That's the good news for today.
9:08
Be good to each other and share good news.
