[gentle music] Good morning, Parrish. This is George Hendman in the heart of Parrish, Florida. Here's today's good news for November 1st, 2026.

0:42
And here in Parrish, mark your calendar for a day that means a whole lot to this town.
0:47
On Wednesday, November 11th, the Parrish Civic Association hosts its second annual Parrish Veterans Day Parade, stepping off at ten in the morning along Fort Hamer Road, just east of Parrish Community High School.
1:02
Last year's first parade brought marching band music, school groups, antique cars, law enforcement, and veterans and organizers expect another strong turnout.
1:14
A ceremony and festival follow from eleven to two at Parrish Community Park with the unveiling of banners honoring veterans, a Parrish wall of honor, a card-making table for messages of gratitude, a flag retirement ceremony, and food trucks.
1:31
It is free and open to everyone. And if your group wants to join the parade, entries are being accepted through today, November first, with no fee to enter.
1:43
November also brings something practical for the folks who served.
1:48
All month long, from November first through the thirtieth, the Manatee County Clerk's office is offering veterans and active duty military members free certified copies of official and court records, free passport photos, and free notary services.
2:04
All you need is a valid DD two fourteen or military ID, and there is no limit on the number of services per visit.
2:12
You can stop by the clerk's office in downtown Bradenton at eleven fifteen Manatee Avenue West, weekdays from eight thirty to four thirty.
2:22
The office will be closed on Veterans Day itself and on Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday, but the rest of the month, that help is there free of charge.
2:32
Another date worth circling is Saturday, November seventh in Palmetto.
2:37
That morning from eight to noon, Turning Points brings more than fifty community agencies together at the Manatee County Fairgrounds for the twenty-eighth annual Manatee County Stand Down.
2:49
It is free and open to everyone, and it puts help all in one place: medical, dental, and vision screenings, mental health support, career help and veteran services, license and identification assistance, haircuts, showers, and hygiene products, plus food, live music, and activities for children.
3:11
The Veterans Amnesty Court will be there too, a court that has dismissed more than one hundred thousand dollars in fines and fees for local veterans in recent years.
3:22
Last entry is at eleven fifteen, and a free shuttle runs from downtown Bradenton to the fairgrounds. Now, a celebration that turns twenty-two this week.
3:34
On Friday, November sixth, then Saturday, November seventh, Bradenton's Village of the Arts hosts its twenty-second annual Festival of the Skeletons.
3:45
It is free, and it draws on Day of the Dead traditions with artwork, decorated altars, and community gatherings through one of Bradenton's most colorful neighborhoods.
3:57
Friday's festivities run from six to nine in the evening and Saturdays from eleven in the morning to four in the afternoon. It is a fine way to spend a fall weekend wandering the galleries and taking in the art.
4:11
And while we're talking about free nights out, here's one right here in Parrish.
4:16
On Friday, November sixth, from six to eight in the evening, Manatee County hosts a free outdoor movie night at Parrish Community Park at seventy-five fifty Fort Hamer Road. The scheduled film is Toy Story Five.
4:33
Bring a blanket or a chair, bring the grandkids, and enjoy a movie under the stars close to home. A little further out on the calendar, but worth planning for now.
4:44
Two Empty Bowls luncheons are coming to feed Manatee County neighbors in need.
4:49
The twenty-sixth annual Empty Bowls luncheon for the Food Bank of Manatee will be held Friday, November thirteenth from eleven to one on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch.
5:01
Advanced tickets are thirty-five dollars, forty dollars the day of the event, and they include a ceramic bowl to keep, along with soups, bread, and dessert.
5:11
Then on Sunday, November fifteenth, from eleven to one, a second Empty Bowls event takes place at the Terra Nova Equestrian Center in Myakka City with tickets at fifty dollars.
5:24
Every dollar of proceeds goes back to hunger and nutrition programs in Manatee County, and the food bank serves more than one hundred local agencies, pantries, and soup kitchens.
5:36
Some good news for folks working their way back from injury or working to stay strong.
5:42
Matterhorn Fit, an advanced rehabilitation and performance company known for working with professional and Olympic athletes, has officially opened its newest location in Lakewood Ranch.
5:55
It is a welcome addition for a fast-growing community and for athletes and everyday folks alike who want expert help getting back on their feet. And a quieter kind of good news, the kind that keeps people safe.
6:09
An East Manatee deputy fire marshal has received specialized training in lithium-ion battery safety, learning how to respond safely to emergencies involving large-scale battery storage systems.
6:24
As battery technology becomes a bigger part of Florida's energy picture, that kind of training matters. It means the folks who answer the call are better prepared for the new risk that come with it.
6:38
Over in Tampa Bay, the University of South Florida has reached a record in research funding. USF brought in $775 million during fiscal year 2026, up 3% from last year and up 42% over five years.
6:56
Federal agencies provided $387 million, and awards from the National Institutes of Health rose 38%.
7:05
Private sector funding reached $315 million, with more than 700 industry partners supporting the work, including trials studying potential treatments for early-stage Parkinson's disease.
7:20
On the ice, Florida had a night to remember on Friday. Anton Lundell scored his first career NHL hat-trick, leading the Florida Panthers to a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets in Sunrise.
7:34
Lundell came into the night with just one goal in 13 games this season, and he waited 372 games for that first hat-trick.
7:43
Seth Jones added a goal and two assists, finishing October with 18 points, tying the most points in a month by a defenseman in Florida Panthers history.
7:54
Goalie Akira Schmid made 22 saves for his third straight win, and the Panthers have now won three in a row and six of their past eight. And for the kids and the kids at heart, a favorite Florida tradition is coming back.
8:09
Legoland Florida's Build to Give Workshop returns on November 20th and runs through January 3rd at the Dream Creation Station in the theme park.
8:20
Young builders can build a Lego heart and share in their joy as part of a mission to gift the superpower of play with Lego sets donated to children in need.
8:31
It runs a week longer than last year and a little earlier too, so there's plenty of time to take part during the holiday season.
8:39
And finally, a bit of hope from the world of medicine and a mystery solved after nearly 20 years.
8:46
Scientists at Johns Hopkins have identified how a common gut bacterium's toxin attaches to colon cells, finding that a protein called claudin-4 acts as the toxin's essential docking point.
9:00
Even more promising, the researchers built a molecular decoy carrying pieces of that protein that lures the toxin away from colon cells.
9:10
In laboratory tests in mice, the decoy protected the animals from the toxin's damage. Now, this is early science, not a treatment for people.
9:20
And the researchers say more work is needed to learn whether this approach can safely prevent disease in humans.
9:28
But after two decades of searching, they have found the missing link, and that opens a new door for preventing damage tied to colorectal cancer. That's the good news for today. Be good to each other and share good news.
