This is a big deal. Australia's legendary Summernats car festival is making its first-ever US appearance, and it's happening right here at Cleetus McFarland's Freedom Factory in Bradenton. Burnout competitions, drag racing, car shows, live music, and a general celebration of horsepower and tire smoke. If you like loud things that go fast, clear your weekend.

🚂 Day Out With Thomas

Thomas the Tank Engine pulls into Parrish for train rides, photo ops, and activities for the little ones. If you've got kids under 8, this is a guaranteed hit. Rides run throughout the day and this event goes through March 28, so plenty of chances if this weekend doesn't work.

📉 Manatee County Crime Drops Nearly 20%
The numbers are in, and they're good. Overall crime in Manatee County dropped nearly 20% year-over-year. Murders fell from 10 to 7, robberies dropped 40%, and the population still grew 3% to over 387,000. Sheriff Rick Wells credited community policing and local partnerships. More people, less crime — that's the formula we like.
🎓 Five Local Students Named National Merit Finalists
Huge congrats to Kevin Chen (Braden River HS), Richard Lay (Manatee HS), Benjamin Barr (Palmetto HS), Pearson Walters (St. Stephen's Episcopal), and Sarah Weis (SCF Collegiate) — all named National Merit Finalists, placing them in the top 1% of test-takers nationwide. They're now eligible for National Merit Scholarships and Florida's Benacquisto Scholarship covering full tuition at any state university. Brains and ambition. We see you.
⚾ $7 Million Little League Complex Coming to Parrish
Parrish is getting a major youth sports upgrade. A $7 million Little League complex has been approved with multiple regulation fields, concession facilities, and parking. If you've been driving 30+ minutes for travel ball, relief is on the way. Groundbreaking expected later this year.
🐕 DOGPerfect Opens in Parrish
New pet supply store alert — DOGPerfect has opened its doors in Parrish, expanding retail options for the growing community. One more reason to keep your shopping local.
🔥 North River Firefighters Calendar Supports Mental Health
North River Fire District firefighters created a charity calendar raising funds for counseling, peer support, and their therapy dog program. Firefighter Gavinn Greeman was also selected for the Australian Firefighters Calendar. Supporting mental health AND looking good doing it.
🏫 Two New Elementary Schools Coming to Parrish & Palmetto
The School District of Manatee County announced two new elementary schools opening Fall 2026: Veterans Elementary (Palmetto, ~300 students K-5) and Rye Ranch Elementary (Parrish). If you've been watching class sizes creep up, this is the news you've been waiting for.
🎖️ Valor Commons Veterans Hub Breaks Ground
Construction has officially started on Valor Commons, a new veterans services hub housing multiple support organizations under one roof — housing assistance, mental health services, job placement, and benefits navigation. The groundbreaking drew a big crowd. A facility like this is overdue and deeply welcome.
🛒 Detwiler's Farm Market Opening 7th Location

🏖️ Free Life Vest Lending Stations — Manatee County's "Beach Like a Local" initiative is rolling out free life vest lending stations at county beaches. Borrow a Coast Guard-approved vest for the kids, return it when you leave. Smart and simple.
🌿 $50M Renewable Gas Project — A $50 million renewable natural gas project converting waste to energy has been announced for Manatee County. Green energy and jobs. We'll take it.
📖 Rotary Reading Volunteers Serving 10 Schools — The Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch has members volunteering as reading mentors at 10 local elementary schools. If you're looking for a way to give back, they'd love the help.
